Early Years & Foundation (1902-1920s)
Real Madrid was founded on March 6, 1902, as Madrid Football Club by a group of football enthusiasts in Spain’s capital. The club quickly gained recognition, winning its first Copa del Rey in 1905.
In 1920, King Alfonso XIII granted the club the royal title "Real", meaning "Royal" in Spanish, and it became Real Madrid Club de Fútbol.
The Santiago Bernabéu Era & European Dominance (1940s-1960s)
After the Spanish Civil War, Santiago Bernabéu became the club president in 1943. His leadership transformed Real Madrid into a football powerhouse:
- Built the iconic Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in 1947.
- Signed world-class players like Alfredo Di Stéfano, Ferenc Puskás, and Francisco Gento.
- Won the first five European Cups (1956-1960), creating a football dynasty.
Struggles & Resurgence (1970s-1980s)
Although Real Madrid remained dominant in Spain, the European titles became harder to win. However, new stars like Emilio Butragueño and Hugo Sánchez helped the club continue its success.
The 1980s saw the rise of "La Quinta del Buitre", a group of homegrown players who won five consecutive La Liga titles (1985-1990).
The Galácticos Era (2000s)
In the early 2000s, under president Florentino Pérez, Real Madrid introduced the Galácticos policy, signing global superstars like:
- Luis Figo (2000)
- Zinedine Zidane (2001) – Scored a legendary goal in the 2002 Champions League final.
- Ronaldo Nazário (2002)
- David Beckham (2003)
This era brought commercial success and two Champions League titles (2000, 2002).
Cristiano Ronaldo & Modern Domination (2009-2018)
Real Madrid made Cristiano Ronaldo the world’s most expensive player in 2009. With stars like Karim Benzema, Sergio Ramos, and Luka Modrić, the club achieved:
- Four Champions League titles in five years (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018).
- The first-ever three-peat in the modern UCL era (2016-2018) under Zinedine Zidane as manager.
Present & Future (2019-Present)
After Ronaldo’s departure in 2018, Real Madrid entered a rebuilding phase. However, led by Karim Benzema, Vinícius Jr., and Luka Modrić, they won:
- La Liga (2020, 2022)
- Champions League (2022) – Their 14th UCL title, with a historic run beating PSG, Chelsea, Man City, and Liverpool.
With young stars like Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Jr., and Eduardo Camavinga, Real Madrid is preparing for another era of dominance.
